Roles and permissions
Apply presets, custom module matrices, and role templates so each member can create, edit, export, or only view what they need.
Pointerly separates a member’s team role (Owner / Admin / Member / Viewer / Partnership) from their permission preset (Admin, Manager, Editor, Viewer, Custom, Partnership). Use presets and the module matrix so people get the right create / edit / export / billing access without oversharing.
What you'll achieve
- Understand roles vs presets
- Open Edit permissions for a member
- Apply a base preset or team role template
- Fine-tune module actions and resource scopes, then save
Before you start
- You can edit_permissions (or equivalent manage access) on team_members
- Target user is not the Owner (owner access cannot be edited)
- Prefer starting from a preset; only switch to Custom when you need exceptions
Concepts
Team roles
| Role | Typical meaning |
|---|---|
| Owner | Full control; billing; cannot be reassigned via Change Role—transfer ownership instead |
| Admin | Elevated operator; only Owner can promote someone to Admin |
| Member | Default role stored on most invitations (preset defines real access) |
| Viewer | Read-oriented role option in the change-role menu |
| Partnership | Brand↔creator exclusive partnership seat |
Permission presets
| Preset | Intended access |
|---|---|
| Admin | Broad access; no billing manage; no member-permission edits |
| Manager | Operational modules—view, create, edit, export; no deletes |
| Editor (recommended on invite) | Create/edit/publish on assigned operational modules; limited deletes (for example automations) |
| Viewer | Read-only (view actions) |
| Partnership | Narrow brand partnership grant (affiliate tags view by default) |
| Custom | Build from the matrix + resource scopes |
Effective access is a snapshot of granted module actions (and optional resource limits). Billing view/manage and inviting others are sensitive—grant deliberately.
Rewards (wallet, invite link, challenges, promotions) is treated like money: Owner and Admin get view + manage (join challenges, claim promotions), Manager and Viewer get view only, and Editor, Collaborator and Partnership get nothing unless you grant it. Brand sponsors never see a sponsored creator’s Rewards. See Rewards FAQ and troubleshooting.
Steps
1. Open a member’s permissions
- Go to Dashboard → Team → Members.
- On the target row (not Owner, not yourself if the UI hides self-manage), click Permissions.
- The Edit permissions sheet opens with an effective-access summary (enabled action count + resource count).
2. Apply a base preset or role template
- Under Base preset, choose
admin, manager, editor, viewer, partnership, orcustom. - Click Apply to replace the member’s preset grants.
- Optional: under Role template, pick a team-saved template and Apply (templates are managed in team access settings when your plan supports them).
- Confirm the summary count updates.
3. Fine-tune the module matrix
- Review Module access. By default only modules with effective access (plus sensitive modules) are shown—click Show all modules to add new areas.
- Toggle actions per module (view, create, edit, delete, export, publish, enable, … depending on the module).
- Use resource scope controls to limit access to specific resources when offered.
- Click Save permissions. Owner rows remain non-editable.
Changes save as explicit grants/revokes over the member preset.
4. Change role from the roster (when needed)
- Open the member ⋮ menu → Change Role.
- Make Admin (Owner only), Make Member, or Make Viewer.
- Changing role resets legacy role defaults—re-check Permissions afterward if you rely on custom grants.
- Never use Change Role to create a second Owner—use ownership transfer.
Tips
- Invite with Editor for creators who publish links/content; use Viewer for stakeholders who only need analytics.
- Keep billing manage on Owners (and rare Admins if you later grant overrides)—Admin preset intentionally excludes billing manage.
- Partnership invites are Enterprise/brand-feature gated; see Invite members.
- After tightening permissions, ask the member to refresh—cached nav may hide modules until the next load.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Permissions button missing | No manage permission / owner row / self | Sign in as Owner/Admin with edit_permissions; pick another member |
| Owner access cannot be edited | By design | Transfer ownership if you must replace the owner |
| Apply preset doesn’t stick | Save not clicked after matrix edits | Use Apply for presets, then Save permissions after matrix tweaks |
| Member still sees a module | Broader grant or template | Show all modules; revoke the action; re-save |
| Can’t make Admin | Only Owner may assign Admin | Ask the Owner to promote |
